Monika Ivy
Little Movers, Modern, and Ballet Instructor

Monika Ivy grew up in the Kansas City area, and has been involved in dance since her childhood. She first studied Ballet, jazz and modern dance at KC’s Midtown School of Dance and City in Motion. She was also a competitive gymnast, and uses these experiences in movement to this day. She went on to get her B.F.A. in Dance from the University of Kansas (class of 2008), where she was trained in ballet, modern, and jazz, and performed as a member of the University Dance Company. She performed works by choreographers such as Patrick Suzeau, Wally Cardona, Bill Evans, and Joan Stone. After graduating, Monika explored modern dance performance and choreography in St. Louis with Atrek Modern Dance Collective. She also taught at several St. Louis area dance schools including C.O.C.A. Center of Creative Arts and Wildwood Dance and Arts, before settling back down in Lawrence. This year, she has recently back up performing in a few local roles in the Lawrence area. Monika has been teaching dance classes in Topeka and Lawrence since 2009. This is now her third year teaching at The Lawrence Art Center. She currently teaches Modern I and Jazz I, Adult Ballet and Adult Tap, and the three Jazz and Musical Theatre Dance classes. Monika is experienced in teaching dance to students of all ages from preschool through adult, and is looking forward to inspiring her students to be both creative and disciplined through dance. She is thrilled to continue being a part of the Lawrence Art Center, and to get the opportunity to work with so many other wonderful artists!

Box Sydney 3rd-5th

3rd - 5th Grades

While planning, designing, and engineering a kid sized, cardboard box metropolis, students apply their imaginations to fill the city in. Using Sydney, Australia as an example, we will look at urban planning and design and how it shapes the world we live in. Students gain appreciation for shape, form, and proportion as they apply these principles to their expanding city. The real magic happens as students take ownership of their structures, identities, and culture within the city. The city is installed in the lobby for all to enjoy with a public opening on the last day of camp.

Yellow Submarine 3rd-5th

3rd - 5th Grades

Fueled by rainbows, love, flower petals, and the spirit of The Beatles, come explore the wonders of the oceans in our magical yellow submarine. Inspired by the whimsical, colorful, and psychedelic artwork of the 1960's, this is a different approach to marine biology and oceanography. Using art principles of color, patterning, and texture, we will create Peter Max-ish marine life drawings, bio-luminescence paintings, and an amazing coral reef sculpture. After all, wouldn?t we all, rather be under the sea, in an Octopus? garden in the shade.
