Wood-fired ceramics has been around for thousands of years. The elaborate history, cultural diversity and research on the topic sustained its use to today and the world of contemporary ceramics. It is a community-based art form that requires the work of many people. In this class you will experience every part of the wood-fire process including generating clay wares, splitting wood, loading, firing, unloading and cleaning the kilns. We will be partnering with the University of Kansas Ceramics Department to fire the soda and wood kilns. Demos on handbuilding and wheel throwing will be given while we discuss how form, surface and kiln placement can affect the final product. This class will meet on Wednesdays with scheduled wood splitting and kiln firings on Fridays or Saturdays. Experience in clay as well as attending kiln prep and clean up is required.

Students will learn the basics of creating jewelry with sheet metal. We will do a pendant the first few classes that involves sawing, sanding, filing, soldering, and setting a stone. When that project is complete, students will be able to choose additional projects. Things like rings, earrings, pendants, bracelets, and small sculpture are all options to explore. Students may want to bring in small stones for first their first project. Copper and first stone provided, silver available for sale during class (expect first projects to cost $5-10 if working with silver).

Open Studio is for advanced-level students who want to work independently. At least four ceramics classes at the Lawrence Arts Center are required before signing up for Open Studio. Fees include equipment use, firing, and basic glazes. Participants must provide their own clay. Unless posted otherwise, participants have open access to the studio during business hours; however, scheduled classes have studio right-of-way. Students must attend a mandatory meeting at 6:30 pm Monday, September 11th in the studio.

Explore film photography in this hands on class that combines art, technology, history, and science. The experience of constructing and launching a canoe of your own making becomes accessible to those with little to no construction skill. Through an innovative design and construction process developed by KU Industrial Design Associate Professor, Tom Huang, students of all ages and experience will be guided in a team effort that involves harvesting local bamboo and recycled plastic grocery bags to construct a fleet of canoes. During this course, we will create a fleet and complete our adventure in a short excursion down the Kaw River.
