Atmospheric Firings Enrollment Closed

Wood-fired ceramics has been around for thousands of years. The elaborate history, cultural diversity and research on the topic sustained its use to today and the world of contemporary ceramics. It is a community-based art form that requires the work of many people. In this class you will experience every part of the wood-fire process including generating clay wares, splitting wood, loading, firing, unloading and cleaning the kilns. We will be partnering with the University of Kansas Ceramics Department to fire the soda and wood kilns. Demos on handbuilding and wheel throwing will be given while we discuss how form, surface and kiln placement can affect the final product. This class will meet on Wednesdays with scheduled wood splitting and kiln firings on Fridays or Saturdays. Experience in clay as well as attending kiln prep and clean up is required.
